Welcome Shonnah Hughes – Girly Geek of the Week!

Shonnah

Meet Shonnah!  Here is another #SuperMom whose been working on the Salesforce platform for 5 years!  This woman rocks!  She is an #AwesomeAdmin, mother to 3, SUPER involved in her local community advocating technology learning/careers for not only women but youth and black men (see links at the bottom of post) AND she was the winner of the Dreamforce Journey to the future video contest! (see link at the bottom of post)  Shonnah is a powerhouse and I am, personally, so impressed and  inspired by all of her giving back while still holding the house down! ❤

Me:  How & when did you start working with Salesforce?

Shonnah : I was the training manager for a large organization who decided to build their entire patient registration and verification process on the SFDC platform. This was a large and challenging task as you can imagine rolling this out to 3 large call centers and over 250 branches throughout the US. That was five years ago that I fell in love with the SFDC platform.   Whoa!  that’s a huge accomplishment!!

Me:  What is your current role working with Salesforce?

Shonnah : Currently I am the lone Admin for two unique enterprise orgs.  #SoloAdmin

Me:  What is your favorite thing to do in Salesforce and why?

Shonnah : My favorite thing to do is to create custom objects. I like to think that I have a very unique and creative mind. I love to use the platform to satisfy my desire for creativity and to solve a complex business issue/process.  Love this!

Me:  Are you currently certified? And if so what certifications do you hold?

Shonnah : I am not currently certified. However, ironically I lead a local study group where four out of four of our attendees just recently passed the ADM201 exam. I do plan on taking the ADM201 cert in the very near future.  Wow!  that’s amazing!  and thank you for helping others advance their Salesforce careers – NOW its YOUR turn! 🙂

Me:  What are some of your aspirations and/or goals when it comes to Salesforce?

Shonnah : I of course would love to just get certified already… for ADM201, 211 and the platform app builder. Those goals are of course immediately attainable if I honker down. The biggest aspiration of mine would be to work with the #Trailhead team. I love teaching people and coming up with new, fun and exciting ways to teach. It’s just the bee’s knees lol…  I think we need to get The Chris Duarte in this conversation!  AND Trailhead rocks!

Me:  Do you have any advice for women working with Salesforce?

Shonnah : I have tons of advice but I don’t want to have you read a book. As a woman working with Salesforce I would say.

  1. Demand equality and Respect
  2. Never shrink back always let your light shine
  3. Find your people and your allies – this will stabilize you and allow you to continually grow through knowledge and support.
  4. Be vocal, be beautiful and be bold.
  5. Actions speak louder than words so show them what women are made of “Grit and Grace”.

As a woman of color:

  1. Be YOU! Those who mind don’t matter and the people that matter don’t mind.
  2. Additionally please reference 1-5 above… 🙂

I truly LOVE this advice!  “Grit and Grace”  #Truth ❤

Me:  What kinds of things are you involved in, and/or do you like to do outside of the Salesforce world?

Shonnah : What do you mean, SF is my life. Yea I wish it was that simple….Well I have three children so I am always pressed for time. I love watching my kids play sports, I am the loudest football, basketball and lacrosse mom on the sidelines (typically designated the team cheerleader). I also love helping others whether its learning SF or mentoring at risk youth. I am also a very active member of my congregation. Soooo… what’s sleep? I’ll do that when I’m dead! lol  Ok, i’m a little tired just reading all that you do! lol

Me:  Are you part of a Girly Geeks Chapter?

Shonnah : Yes, I am the Co-Leader for the MN Chapter of WIT and the Leader of the new and exciting Diversity WIT chapter!  Please show this chapter some love and join and/or spread the word. Believe me you want to be part of the change movement that is happening.  Yes indeed and so happy to see you and Toya Gatewood taking the lead on this!

It was a pleasure getting to know you Shonnah and thank you very much for sharing!

You are definitely an inspiration!
